And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
Philippians 2:8 (ESV)
Jesus, the King of all creation, offered a powerful lesson one last time before his closest friends betrayed, denied, and deserted him.
Surely knowing they would all abandon him, he stripped off his outer robes and stooped before each one with a basin of water to wash their dirty feet. He willingly performing the task of the lowest household servant.
He purposely chose the lowest task to teach them to be humble.
Jesus always chose humility. From the way he was born, to the ordinary life he led before his public ministry, to the way he preached and healed and saved, Jesus’ life spoke volumes about humility.
Jesus chose humility when he had every right to choose glory.
In our narcissistic world today, humility is shocking. We live in a me-focused culture where so many are vying for 15 minutes of fame. We battle indulgence, apathy, and entitlement in a world that values wealth, fame, and elevated social status.
When the world sees someone choose humility even though they “deserve” glory, it is stunned silent. Silent enough to listen to Jesus’ words of life.
My Life Lesson
Do you want to make a true difference in this self-centered world?
Choose humility, like Jesus did.
Even though I am college-educated, I am not above performing the menial tasks at work.
I’m going to complete this household chore today even if no one says thank you, because it serves our family.
Today I will listen more than I speak. I will search out someone who needs encouragement and I’ll save my stories for another day.
To cultivate humility in your daily life, meditate on Philippians 2:5-8. You can experience greater peace through humility, knowing you are putting on the attitude Jesus highly values. You spread the life of Christ through humility, and the world will know Jesus through you.
What one humble action will you take this Holy Week to draw people to Jesus?
Dear Father in heaven,
Thank you for giving me the perfect example of humility in your son, Jesus.
I need to be more humble, Lord. Show me areas of my life where pride is getting in the way. Teach me to willingly give up my rights and serve others, just like Jesus did.
I don’t want to be puffed up in my own pride any longer, Lord. Grant me the spirit of humility, which is so pleasing to you.
In Jesus’ name,
