The grass withers, the flower fades,
but the word of our God will stand forever.
Isaiah 40:8 (ESV)
After a cold winter, we rejoice as the spring flowers appear. Yellow daffodils, red tulips, pink peonies, and purple hyacinths make a pretty display. Their new life cheers our winter-weary spirits.
Yet spring flowers last only a few weeks at most. Their brief, beautiful lives remind us that our time on earth is relatively short. Do you know that in the eternal timeline, your life on earth lasts only as long as a springtime flower?
This can be a difficult truth to accept. We want to think of ourselves as invincible. But God’s Word keeps us humble. We really are made of dust, just like our ancestor Adam was in the Garden of Eden. However, we can find hope even though our lives are slowly fading.
We can find great comfort in meditating on this fact: God and his word will stand forever. He will never fade like spring flowers do. His glory will shine eternally, and his word will always be true.
As followers of Jesus, we will live forever with him in heaven, where new life always flourishes. We will stand forever beside him in a place where love, joy and peace never fade. We will be in heaven with his holy Word, which never fades.
Heaven is where we need to place our hope as believers. Our lives on earth are not the main story. They are preparation for days which will never end. Days full of glory, beauty and peace (read Revelation 21 and 22 for a peek). These days will never fade for us. Doesn’t that give you hope?
When you look at the spring flowers this year, praise God for their beauty. Thank him for preserving your life. Ask him to help you value each day in light of eternity. He will prepare you for heaven as you keep this humble perspective.
Dear Father in heaven,
Thank you for the promise of heaven and the beauty of your word.
I need to remember that my life is so brief. I want to live my days in service to you and others. Help me make the most of the time I have here on this earth, Lord.
When I get too high or too low, remind me of the great hope I have in heaven. I know your word will stand forever, and I will never fade away as long as I cling to you.
In Jesus’ name,
