“O Lord, what are human beings that you should notice them, mere mortals that you should think about them? For they are like a breath of air; their days are like a passing shadow.” (Psalm 144: 3-4, NLT)
Life is fleeting and we all know this to be true. We need only to take a quick look at your adult children and you are reminded of how the years have flown by. While in the throes of diapers, feedings, car pools and being a taxi driver, we think they will never be grown.
And then it happens.
Reality sinks in. Although we knew life was precious, now we truly know!
The Holman Old Testament Commentary states: “Man is like a breath, a vapor, that appears for a moment and then disappears. His days are flickering, without stability, empty, and hollow like a fleeting shadow.” We are mere humans with a transitory existence, we are passing through to our home.
God is mighty and all powerful. We are frail and broken. Yet He thinks of us all the time. We are never not on His mind.
It’s yet winter. Take the time to go outside and blow a breath.
When we blow a breath into cold air, it is visible for only a short time. Shadows will shift and be gone if the light changes. So it is with life, our days are numbered.
May we each desire for our lives to matter. To make a difference. To be a display of God’s love. To fulfill the purposes He has for me. To bring Him glory.
“I want my one little breath to feel more like a mighty gust of wind.”
Lord, we thank You today for this reminder of the preciousness of our days. Teach us to number our days rightly. Help us to remember the days are long and the years are short. They pass as quickly as our breath on a cold morning or a shadow that fades as the light changes. May all we do and say be to the glory of Your Name and for Your purposes alone. It is in Your Name we pray, Amen.
