Paul…in HOPE of eternal life which God, who cannot lie, promised before time began…Titus 1.2
True stories are the hardest to share but they are the most meaningful testimonies of God’s grace and kindness.
It was a hot, humid summer day in the Appalachian Mountains, word came that my daughter’s fiancee had been tragically murdered. I stood on the front porch waiting for my sister to pick me up – we were driving to where my girl was.
I looked at my husband and sobbed, “I never asked him if he was a Jesus follower.” Hubs looked at me and said, “But, I did.”
“You did? You never told me. What did he say?”
“He told me he knew beyond a shadow of doubt that Jesus was his Savior.”
Jesus had very close friends in Bethany; Mary, Martha, and Lazarus, siblings. Lazarus became very ill and the sisters went straightway to Jesus and told Him to come to their home to heal their brother – Jesus did not go right away. He knew Lazarus’ sickness was to glorify God. The story goes, Lazarus died and was buried in a tomb.
Jesus and His disciples came to Bethany, but, Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days. Martha spotted them walking over the ridge and ran to meet them – she was in deep despair of heart.
“Lord, if You had been here Lazarus would not have died.” Martha, not fully comforted, turned and went back to the place her sister Mary was. Martha told Mary that she had met Jesus on the ridge and He was going to come to them.
Mary quietly made her way to Jesus, found him, and made the same statement, “Lord if You had been here Lazarus our brother would not have died.”
In other words? Jesus, You were our only Hope and You didn’t show up.
Jesus did go to the tomb and He called Lazarus up from the dead – I wonder…
When Jesus is the only Hope you’ve got? He’s the only Hope you need!
Father God, in the Name of Jesus, we declare to You today – when YOU are the only One we have? You are the only Hope we need. Fill us today with Your hope, wash us with Your mercy, and abide in us with Your grace. We love You so. Amen.
