She looked away when their eyes met. This was a normal day to hide in plain-sight. Being “unknown” was a way of life for her. “Can I have a drink?” the Stranger asked. She noticed that He had nothing to draw with, and equally she was surprised that He wanted anything to do with her, seeing that HE was a Jew.
The Stranger continued, as if reading the question on her face. “You don’t know what I want to give you, and you don’t know who is asking you for a drink. If you did, you would ask me for the water that gives life. Thirst is a part of life but what I have quenches all your thirsts”, His words bounced around in her cavernous mind. She had always been thirsty and the reality of deep satisfaction was forgotten. Using and being used by people, and then being thrown away was her reality.
As the stranger spoke, LIGHT eclipsed her darkness. “I deeply see into your heart and I know you, and I love what I see.” Shame had held her prisoner for so long, her thoughts collided within her, if he really knew me, He would want nothing from me. She started to move away in fear of engaging any further. “I know where you have been, and where you are now, do not fear. My love will not leave you were you are today.” She sensed that this Stranger was different from any other men that she had met, He was willing to give, not take from her. She felt that the Stranger knew her, and understood her, a feeling that she had not experienced in a long time. As the Stranger continued to speak, she realized that her greatest need was the Living Water that He was speaking of. “Give me this water!” she blurted out. Her desperate wounded soul finally reached out in hope. She was tired of hiding and projecting a false image. She was lost, but someone found her. She was no longer invisible, she was now deeply seen! As she looked around she shouted – “come see the man who sees me and understands me!”
Jesus is a Stranger to many, but He doesn’t have to be. He sees, knows and completely accepts you. Stop running from Love, collapse into His arms – the search is over.
