Guard my teachings as the apple of your eye.
Bind them on your fingers; write them on the tablet of your heart.
Proverbs 7:2b-3 (NIV)
I’m a life-long student. Training classes, the learning curve for a new job, ministry and leadership seminars, writing conferences, spiritual retreats, and Bible studies include some of my favorite ways to learn.
Classrooms come in many forms. With walls or online, with desks or chairs.
How do you imagine God’s classroom? Is there a white board? What about globes, pictures of the world or photos of His students?
Does God give hall passes and wait on tardy students for important lessons?
The Lord’s our Teacher for spiritual truth and matters of the heart.
Proverbs 7 gives us a lesson in 3 action words concerning God’s teachings: guard, bind, and write.
Google helps us with the meanings for each of these words.
Guard means to watch over and protect. So God’s students watch over His teachings as the apple of our eye. Literally speaking it’s the center/pupil of the eye and figuratively it means cherished above all else.
Bind is defined as to fasten, secure, tie, or attach. Commentaries note the imagery of strings tied to fingers as a reminder of things to do.
Write indicates to record, to note, and to log information.
What better place for God’s teachings and His truth, than on the tablet of human hearts.
His Word always reminds our heart of truth.
God’s lessons always help our heart to trust Him.
The Lord’s teachings always guide us through life.
But it’s our responsibility to guard, bind, and write.
Perhaps our imagination of God’s classroom isn’t too far off track. Since God formed the world, He displays His glorious creation on every wall. We also find our portrait, complete with our name and a loving description of His fondness for us.
God’s classroom contains a white board—our heart. May we write His truth there and never erase it.
Maybe the times we wait on God to move in our life is His version of a hall pass.
But He wants us to always return to His classroom.
Will we learn the spiritual lessons He teaches us? Will we apply them to every season of life?
Are you a life-long student in God’s classroom?
God, You are the good Teacher of truth that brings life. Help me to always be a student of Your Word and to guard Your teachings. Give me the desire to learn spiritual lessons and to record them on my heart for safe keeping. In the name of Jesus. Amen.
