Three ladies were walking up the steps in front of me.
It was a flight of about 39 steps leading up the the main entrance of Springhill Baptist Church near Canton, NC.
One lady, who I guess was in her seventies, and walked with a cane, was helping another lady assist a third woman (even older) up the steps.
About half way up, they joked about catching each other if the first one fell.
They didn’t realize I had walked up behind them and they were surprised when they heard me say, “Don’t worry if y’all all fall. I’ll catch you. I’m standing on the rock!”
We shared a laugh and continued into the church.
The purpose of my visit was to do a presentation on behalf of the Gideons.
A fellow Gideon met me at the door and we went in together, met the pastor and chatted some, and had a prayer for the service.
Then I picked up a copy of the bulletin containing the order of worship.
One of the first songs listed was “On Christ the Solid Rock I Stand.”
I did a double take.
Serendipity? Coincidence? God speaking to me?
Whatever, it bolstered my confidence.
It was an easy choice to change the beginning of my presentation.
“I’m in the right place today…
and there are three women out there somewhere who can vouch for what I’m about to tell you.”
The three ladies began to laugh and wave at me. One held up the program announcing the song.
I finished the story and it was a great beginning to an inspiring service. The pastor followed up with a seven minute sermon in which he offered five ways his flock could use their Bibles.
My calling as a Gideon has fulfilled itself in our church ministry. I’m at home in front of a group and especially when it comes to speaking about the Gideons International and our work. We do lots more than simply placing Bibles in hotels. Every service in which I have participated has been a blessing and this one was certainly one that won’t be soon forgotten.
Stand on Christ the solid rock,
and you’ll find yourself in the right place, too.
