Everything is possible for one who believes.
Mark 9:23 (NIV)
Does something in your life seem impossible right now? A dream, a hope, a vision for the future?
I have unmet needs that seem impossible right now. Dreams. Hopes. Visions.
Also, I wish my fears that haunt me would go away forever–but that seems impossible at times.
Even though I’ve had strong faith for over thirty years, I often struggle with a negative mindset. My negative, doubtful, and cynical thoughts whisper, “Yeah, right, Jesus. Everything is possible for you? What about this situation?”
Negativity and hopelessness like to walk hand-in-hand in my thought life. When they meet up with Impossible, they say, “I’m not surprised.”
Two years ago, I started a New Year’s Day tradition of picking a focus verse for the year, rather than making a resolution. For weeks I prayed that God will show me which verse to pick.
In December 2017, I bought a CD from Lifeway with various women Bible teachers speaking truths. When I heard Lisa Harper use Mark 9:23 in an illustration, the Holy Spirit nudged my heart and said, “This is your verse for 2018.”
Jesus spoke these words to a father desperate for a solution. He brought his demon-possessed son to Jesus for healing. The man said, “If you can do anything, take pity on us and help us.” Jesus challenged the man’s faith with the words recorded in Mark 9:23.
I turned Mark 9:23 into a graphic for my computer screensaver. Every day, I read it and honestly ask myself, “Do you take Jesus on His Word? He said everything is possible for the one who believes.”
I’m learning that my faith has lots of room to grow, far more than I expected. And it’s grown quite a bit since January 1, when this verse started passing through my mind every day. It has helped negativity and hopelessness, along with fears and doubt, quit haunting me.
Everything is possible…
A boy possessed by a demon can be healed.
Loved ones can choose sobriety.
Prodigals can return home.
I can be freed from my fears.
All this (and more) is possible if I believe. But not by believing in the broken situations. Nor in others’ wayward hearts. Not by trusting in my own willpower.
If I place my belief in Jesus, trusting fully in Him to accomplish His perfect will in His perfect time, I can say with confidence, “Everything is possible for ME, because I believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, who makes all things possible!”
Jesus, I praise you as the only One who makes all things possible.
I confess that I don’t always believe that is true. Doubt, fear, and negativity cloud my vision. I believe part of the way, and I need your help in my unbelief.
Teach me to trust you as my Lord and Savior. Remind me of your miracles that proved You can do anything You want. Show me the glories of Your creation, hidden in everyday beauties, that teach me You are making all things new.
I pray this in Your powerful name,
