Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
Psalm 23:6 (ESV)
I’m being followed. Are you?
We live in a culture of followers. Children follow at our heels. People follow our example. Others follow us in our callings or our online presence.
Sadly, the ordeal may turn harrowing such as an unwanted follower…a stalker online or in person.
But what if the follower has our best interest at heart? What if his presence provides security and comfort? What if God—out of His great compassion—enlists followers who carefully watch over us?
That’s what the heavenly Father promises His children—an intentional pursuit around the clock. Scripture confirms goodness and mercy chase us.
As stated in Psalm 23:6, I believe goodness and mercy are overlooked as our greatest followers.
Through my own personal experience of when someone watched and followed me, I saw something different in my relationship with God. More than any person who might follow us, God’s goodness and mercy are the most important aspects that follow us.
The Lord not only knows us in an intimate way, but He also stays close behind us with His omnipotent help and strength. Out of the Lord’s great love and compassion for us, He follows us with goodness and mercy.
Similar to how a groom pursues his bride, God chases us because He loves us. And no more than a fiancé or wife wants her man to stop pursuing her, the Lord’s pursuit continues in every part of our lives, from beginning to end.
How are we followed by goodness and mercy?
What does this mean in our life?
No matter how far we stray from God, His goodness and mercy find us. And even if our path seems uncertain, God’s goodness and mercy still follow us with certainty. When others don’t extend them to us, God always will.
Even when goodness and mercy seem silent, we can trust they are there. Always working behind the scenes on our behalf.
God follows us with His perfect ways all our days.
Here’s the best part. Although life never resembles the perfect Hallmark movie, God’s goodness and mercy remain the hallmark of our faith.
When we find our voice to tell our story, we discover God’s goodness and mercy play the leading roles.
Friend, you’re being followed.
Lord, You are a good Father always extending mercy to Your children. I’m thankful that You pursue me all my days with Your perfect ways. Help me recognize the presence of goodness and mercy and see their footprints in my life. In the name of Jesus. Amen.
