My Life Verse
Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses,
let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely,
and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus,
the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross,
despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. Hebrews 12:1-2 (ESV)
I had been raised in a Christian home and accepted Christ as a pre-teen,
but it seemed my life was topsy-turvy in so many directions.
My insecurities and lack of a spiritual mentor resulted in lots of poor choices, mistakes, and failures.
It would not be until adulthood that the truth of grace and the gospel
were woven more deeply into the fabric of my life.
But because of those mistakes and failures, I still had a habit I could not shake
of looking in the rear view mirror of my life.
How could the Lord possibly love me and accept me after I had failed Him?
As I was reading in the Word during a quiet time in Hebrews 12:1-2,
I sensed the Lord speaking so clearly to me that I was looking in the wrong direction.
I couldn’t proceed when my focus was on the rearview mirror.
My focus, my endurance to run the race set before me,
could only come when I was focusing on Him, the Lord.
Lord, help me never to mistake the depth of your love and grace,
to focus on you and what path you have laid out for me,
resting in the assurance of your forgiveness for all those times I let you down or walked away.
Let my focus be always on you. You already knew I wasn’t perfect.
You had that covered when I accepted you. Thank you for your unspeakable gift. Amen
