Eating Clean for your Soul

Eating real food is all the rage with my circle of friends. Unlike the ‘starve yourself’ diets, this is a good trend since it focuses on eating foods that are real – meaning foods in their most natural state. Unfortunately, with hormones being added to meat & milk, vegetable seeds being altered before they’re even planted, the chemical spraying of non-organic crops, and the mineral depletion of much of our soil, even this food choice can be compromised, but it’s a start – because there’s an unavoidable truth – we only get out of our body what we put into it.

This truth is not just for our physical bodies, it’s also for our souls! We’ll only get out of our souls what we put into them. For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks. (Lk.6:45b)

When we invite Christ into our life our spirit goes from being dead, to being alive. It is now 100% complete. We don’t have a little Jesus that needs to grow, but what does need to grow and change however, is our soul. This is our battle field, and our responsibility. What we put in, what we dwell on, this is what will pour out, especially during those difficult, when push comes to shove times. Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. (Prov.4:23)

The Sunday school song says “be careful little eyes what you see, be careful little ears what you hear.” This doesn’t change when we become adults. If sex and violence are what you’re putting in, that is what will come out. If grumbling and gossip tickles your ears, that is what will pour forth from you. First in thought, and then in deed if you don’t take captive every thought, or learn to replace wrong emotions with right ones.

So how does one have good thoughts and good emotions? By focusing on, and learning to believe, who we are in Christ. Learn the I am scriptures, or as Dr. Jim Richards says, the In Him, by Him and through Him scriptures. When wrong emotions overwhelm us, replace them with true ones. For example, if you continually re-play in your mind the latest offense, your emotions will soon take a dive down the dark worm hole, BUT if we choose instead to think about the FACT (this is the truth and not the lie,) that In Him we live, and move, and have our being (Acts. 17:28), or that In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace (Eph.1:7), or that You are complete in Him who is the head of all principality and power (Col.2:10) or that The Lord will make you the head and not the tail (Dt.28:13) or …

Hopefully you get the idea. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. (John 8:32) It is up to us to feed these truths to our soul. When we immerse ourselves in these truths, they will overflow out of our heart when pressed. The biblical definition of ‘know’ is not the chasing of intellect, as the world does, but it includes learning, understanding and living it out. When we truly know a biblical principal, we are experiencing it!

Let us seek God with all our heart by eating clean for our soul. It is then that we will truly cry out, it is well with my soul!
