Are you weary, how are you coping with stress? Perhaps you feel frustrated and burnt-out from life? Are you wishing for a trip away to refresh and regroup?
Life is exhausting, isn’t it?
There’s always so much to do and places to go. We’re running on Mach-5 and keeping up by downing energy drinks and keeping abreast of the world with our smartphones.
We’re always going….anxiety, stress, and depression are on the rise. No wonder because we are always running. Like a hamster on its hamster wheel, we are running on our own wheels. Spinning fast, but hardly getting anywhere unless it’s tension and increased blood pressure.
When life gets hard, our human reaction is to run.
Where are you running from?
How are you coping with stress?
I’ll get out of town and things will be better when I return. How about a trip to Mexico to rest?
Could the best answer to weariness be found in the Bible?
(Matthew 11:28-30, NLT).
28 Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.”
In this passage, God isn’t telling us to find rest in Mexico or in Sedona, but He can give us rest.
His rest is not a spa treatment or an extended time sleeping, although these can help us refresh our bodies. Rather, His rest is intentional action on our part. We need to run to Him to get His rest.
The Real Source of Rest
So many times we feel burdened and weary because we are carrying things that God doesn’t mean for us to carry. The world believes it needs to control and deal with issues themselves, the idea of letting a God help them is a foreign concept, so the world can’t find rest in God.
This unbelief keeps the world from finding true rest in Jesus.
Best Ways to Cope with Stress
1. Give our worries and burdens to God.
2. Leave it to God, don’t try and take it back.
3. Trust God will take care of it.
4. We can believe God will take care of it because He knows our needs and desires.
5. God wants to lead us.
We can trust in God because He is all-powerful, all-knowing and all-present. Nothing escapes God so He is the perfect person to take complete control of our situation.
The real issue of not allowing God to give us rest is the belief that we need to earn God’s favor. We can’t rest completely in Him because we don’t think He is who He says He is, or He’ll do what He says He’ll do. It’s important to realize, ee can trust in Him because He sent His Son to us and the Bible proves He is trustworthy.
Coping with Stress Means Giving up Control
When we hear the word rest, we think sleeping or to refrain from all activity. However, God’s rest is hope and wisdom that God is in control and has us. It’s not running from our problems, but rather handing over to the Problem-Solver.
We can find rest for our souls when we spend time in His word growing in faith. It’s also beneficial to be in an encouraging community where we have others cheering us on in our Christian walk. God promises to take our problems and exchange them for His which are easy and will not weigh us down. God will never get tired and He will supply us with endless energy and strength when we seek Him.
28 Have you never heard?
Have you never understood?
The Lord is the everlasting God,
the Creator of all the earth.
He never grows weak or weary.
No one can measure the depths of his understanding.
29 He gives power to the weak
and strength to the powerless.
30 Even youths will become weak and tired,
and young men will fall in exhaustion.
31 But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength.
They will soar high on wings like eagles.
They will run and not grow weary.
They will walk and not faint.
God’s Rest doesn’t have an Expiration Date
When problems come upon us and stress begs to pull us under, let us draw near to God instead of wanting to run away from it all. The reality is, when we run away, the problems will remain when we return.
If we go to Mexico to refresh when we return the weariness can set back in. To keep lasting refreshment and rest, we need to plug into the endless Energy-shot. We can find everlasting peace and rest when we trust in the Sovereignty of God. He is with us and promises to take our burdens and give us His rest.
Are you going to conform to how the world finds rest or plug into God’s rest?
