I’ve been pondering, chewing, and digging to try and understand “the joy of the Lord.” The more verses I read, study, and dissect; the more I find a common thread. Joy is found by spending time with God, obeying Him, thanking Him, reading His word, praising (through word and song), and abiding and dwelling in His presence.
God promises when we draw near to Him, He will draw near to us, and when we seek Him with our hearts, we will find Him. God is The One who brings joy, and Jesus is the one who gives access to The Father. When Jesus is Lord of our lives, joy comes through His grace, mercy, and love. Joy is Jesus, and the joy He gives is the joy we receive when we come to Him.
God’s joy is the perfect picture of a perfect, loving relationship. The love God gives is the love we all desire. God is The One who will cuddle next to us when we cuddle up to Him. God is The One who listens to our hearts. God is The One who won’t ever misunderstand, but will know exactly what you mean, even when your words are jumbled, confused, a desperate whisper, or merely a groan.
Nehemiah 8:10 tells us the joy of the Lord is our strength. In God’s joy, strength is found. One of the definitions in the 1828 Webster’s Dictionary of “strengthen” is to animate. Animate is to make alive, to give spirit or vigor; to infuse courage, and joy. Oh my do you see how joy returns and rebounds?
Joy is found in the strength, in the animation of making us alive in the presence of God. And in the presence of God we are alive, full, strengthened, animated, and joyful.
Replace the pursuit of joy with the pursuit of God. For in seeking God, we find Him, and in His presence is the fullness of joy!

Joyful delight is found when we spend time with God and His word. Please make time each day to pursue God, for in His presence you will find His joy.
