“For we are His workmanship, having been created in Christ Jesus
for good works that God prepared beforehand so we may do them.”
– Ephesians 2:10 –
When I became a believer …
and follower of Christ, I got very excited when my pastor or my team chaplain talked about how God has a plan and a purpose for my life. I believed them because I believed in the Word of God, but I wasn’t quite sure how it would play out in my own life. Since I was already in the Major Leagues, I thought I had fulfilled my purpose. But during one season in our Bible study we read Ephesians 2:10 which teaches us that God has prepared good works for us to do—works that were set in place from eternity past. This truth gave me a new platform in my profession as a ballplayer to do these good works for God in Christ Jesus. So that’s what I began doing.
Twenty years later, I now find myself transitioning into a new role in life. I’m getting back into the game of baseball as a hitting coach with the Giants organization at the minor-league level after being out of the game for over fifteen years. In this new phase of life, God has reminded me of the preparation that Moses went through to lead the Israelites out of bondage in Egypt and into the promised land. Moses spent his first forty years living under the influence of the Egyptian culture, having being raised in the palace. Then for the next forty years he lived the life of a shepherd. Experiencing the first forty years gave Moses the ability to confront Pharaoh on God’s behalf; the next forty years gave him the ability to lead the Israelites into the wilderness.
I believe God has prepared me …
for this moment to lead and teach these young men in baseball to get to where they need to go. He did this by first allowing me to play sixteen years of professional ball and the next fifteen years out of the game to raise three boys. While I was going through these stages over the past thirty-one years, I couldn’t see what God had in store for me. But as I look back now at my own life, and the example of Moses’ life, I can see that God has prepared me for this transition—and that He prepared the transition for me.
Do you believe that God is in control of your entire life? That no matter what your situation is, He has not only good works for you to do where you are, but something special waiting in the future because of your current circumstances? You may not see it yet but. . . .
“I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you
will bring it to completion at the day of Christ Jesus.”
– Philippians 1:6 –
God is the One who prepares, and we get the wonderful opportunity to play a part in all that He has prepared. Allow Him to work in you so you can do good works for Him.
How is God encouraging you today?
