He’s got the whole world in His hands

Who knows how much water is in His hand? Who has used his hand to know how far the heavens reach? Who knows what the dust of the earth would fill? Who has weighed the mountains and the hills? Isaiah 40.12

When I was a girl we would sing *He’s got the whole world in His hands…* in Sunday school and children’s church. Last week, those words came back to me. I found myself humming the tune. When I woke in the night, the song was on my mind.

Do you remember the song?

As a child, it was one of our favorites. When the teacher or children’s church pastor would start singing, we’d join in exuberantly. We sang it like we understood and meant it. He’s got you and me, brother, in His hands. He’s got you and me, sister, in His hands…

It was our child-like faith in action, I suppose. The lively rhythm and words were easy to sing. And it never crossed our mind to not believe what we were singing.

The deep places of the earth are in His hand. And the tops of the mountains belong to Him. Psalm 95.4

The world is still in His hands.

You can still trust in this, today. In spite of the turmoil, injustice, lack of moral compass…this world is still in His hands.

As we look at the state of our nation and we head to the polls…to elect a president…government officials…supreme court justices…and the future of our children and grandchildren – we can trust that the world remains in His hands.

Blessed be the name of God,
forever and ever.
He knows all, does all:
He changes the seasons and guides history,
He raises up kings and also brings them down,
he provides both intelligence and discernment,
He opens up the depths, tells secrets,
sees in the dark—light spills out of him! (Daniel 2.21-22 The Message)

This passage in Daniel 2 has influenced my thoughts and prayers over the past few months. We can hold this up as a beacon of light over the darkness around us, as Daniel did in the dark days of his captivity in Babylon.

In darkness, we look to The Light!

By faith, we can see The Light. He is still The Light of the world, you know. This has not changed.

He is The Light in Genesis 1.1-3.
He is The Light in Daniel 2.22.
He is The Light in John 1.5.

And The Light of the world still holds the world.

He loves the world. He is its Maker and Creator. He knew us before we came into this world. And He holds eternity in His hand. I want to trust in someone who has my best interests at heart, don’t you? No matter what man or woman promises, at some point, they will let us down. Unfortunately, this is bound to happen.

They may promise us the world, but they do not hold the world and they certainly cannot give us the world.

We know the One who does and can!

His promises are *yes and amen*. His Word is true. His love is perfect. His reach is infinite. And His rule is sovereign. And so, today, we pray…

God of heaven and Maker of the world, we still believe You have the whole world in Your hands. As we stare imminent change in the face and prepare for new rulers over our land, our cities, and the circumstances this will create, we declare loud and strong that You are the Sovereign Ruler over all things. It is in You we place our trust. We believe Your promises are the promises that will hold firm in the days to come. And it is Your Light we will see shining in the darkness all around. For we believe…

He’s got the whole world in His hands.
