The Perfect Storm …
a gripping 1997 non-fiction read by Sebastian Junger, tells the story of the Andrea Gail, a commercial fishing vessel that was lost at sea on Halloween of 1991, when the fishing crew was confronted by three separate raging weather systems which unexpectedly collided to produce one of the fiercest documented mega-storms in modern history.
Sooner or later, we all come to what appears as a desperate dead-end situation – maybe you are in one right now.
Some of Jesus’ closest friends and followers could completely relate. Though veteran fishermen by trade, they too met the mega-storm of a lifetime on the Sea of Galilee, a storm so severe that the very integrity of the boat and the lives of it’s crew were deemed at maximum risk. Yet, Jesus (in pure exhaustion) was asleep on a cushion in the stern of the very same vessel, forcing His terrified friends to wake Him and ask “that” question which has been asked by every traveler this side of eternity since creation . . “Lord, don’t you care?”
If you find yourself today …
in a hopeless churning sea or a stone-cold field of broken dreams, the resounding answer from God’s very Word is “Yes”, He cares for us far beyond the level of care we even extend to ourselves.
The reassurance of Psalm 103:12? “As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him”
The request of 1 Peter 5:7? “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.”
The response of the Savior to your perfect storm? “Silence, be still . . and it was perfectly calm.”
