Who is your favorite athlete? …
Serena and Venus Williams are some of the most famous tennis stars. They were well known even before they hit their teenage years. Michael Phelps was an olympic swimmer, and you may remember his epic eight Gold Medials in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. Tiger Woods is famous for his amazing golf record. Lebron James is known for his basketball skills. Tim Tebow is known for his life on the football field and the stand he takes off the field for his faith in Jesus.
I will be honest, there are few sports which gain my attention for long. I watch UGA football some, because the men in my house are usually screaming at the TV from August to November. Plus, the mascot is pretty cute. I love to watch local high school football games is about as athletic as I may get.
My favorite athletes are Mary Lou Retton in gymnastics, and the figure ice skater, Scott Hamilton. Mary Lou was a little powerhouse of precision. I could watch her all day. As you can see my sports do not involve plowing anyone over! Scott was graceful and powerful at the same time. I am more into beauty and grace than following any kind of ball on a field.
To Excel …
America is enthralled with athletes of all kinds from the baseball field to the track field to the hockey rink. We love our sports! To be a pro athlete or an olympian takes many, many hours of practice. They persevere bad days and hard days, broken bones or torn muscles, to get to a place of greatness in their sport. They do not wake up one morning to say “Today I will be Great!” Then go out and decide to play a sport better than anyone else. They train, workout, eat healthy, sacrifice their social life, and practice, practice, practice. They follow the directions of their coaches and trainers to excel.
Do you want to excel as a Christian? I am not asking if you want to be super Christian for fame and glory. I am asking, do you want to know God intimately? Do you want to be so close you can feel Him moving in your life and the life of your family? Are you willing to sacrifice time and energy to gain a closer relationship with God?
Do you want to see Him make a difference in someone else’s life, because you were obedient to the call? It is exciting to see God move in the life of a friend, because you prayed for them or shared Christ with them. There is no greater joy than to see Him move.
Spending time studying God’s word and being in prayer daily is the best practice we can have to be an All-Star Christian in God’s eyes. I want to encourage you to take your faith to the next level. I desire to challenge you to make God the top priority in your life, and not something you do when life falls apart.
God is waiting to use you in somebody’s life today to give a kind word, to pray for them, or perhaps they are watching to see how you respond to a situation. Stop now, and let Him pour into your heart and soul. As we feed on the word of God, the Holy Spirit opens our eyes to see things we have not seen before. Our senses will be more keenly aware of the spiritual world moving as we practice our time in prayer with God.
Are you willing to pray it through?
And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests.
With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.
~ Ephesians 6:18 ~
R. A. Torrey in How to Pray comments on this verse, “Paul realized the natural slothfulness of man, and especially his natural slothfulness in prayer. How seldom we pray things through! How often the church and the individual get right up to the verge of a great blessing in prayer, and just then let go, get drowsy, quit. I wish that these words ‘being sleepless unto prayer’ might burn into our hearts. I wish the whole verse might burn into our hearts.”
Don’t quit now! Keep praying for your brother or sister who has turned away from God. God can do more than we ask or imagine (Ephesians 3:20). The hopeless marriage, the wayward child, the impossible financial situation or insert your impossible situation here. Keep praying until God answers, and praise Him for the answer before it comes!
You and iNeed prayer time with God
There are many needs to pray for each day. I use a prayer planner to organize my prayer time. Always pray for someone the minute you hear about their need. Pray at work or on the phone with a friend when they share a hurt or need in their life. Prayer is how we access the infinite power of God through the Holy Spirit living in us. We can only do great things for God with the power of God. We can pray as we go about our day, and as people come to mind as well.
You can customize it to work for you. Print it out at home, or take it to a printer to create your own loose leaf planner and journal to add and take away pages.
Are you ready to do whatever it takes to be a great prayer warrior?
Prayer warriors are not reserved for special people. Prayer warriors are intentional about their time with God interceding for others all throughout the day. They may not be on their knees praying. They may be delivering your mail, checking you out at the grocery store, or taking care of you at the doctors office. Prayer warriors become great prayer warriors by praying daily in the power of the Holy Spirit for their friends, family, and people they have never met.
Today let’s take a step to be an even greater prayer warrior!
