And my God will supply every need of yours
according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus
A while back …
a preacher decided to keep track of all the people’s request for one week. He wrote down every question that he was asked and made note of all their complaints in an attempt to uncover the mystery of what people really want. He had noticed that after all the messages preached, all the counseling sessions completed, and all the teachings complete that the people where still searching, but were they really searching for the right thing? When people stopped by to see him, what was it they were really after? When they called him on the phone, what was really on their mind and heart? What was bothering them?
We must realize that everyone is wanting or looking for something. Psalms 42 :1 says,
“As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God.”
This Psalm tells us that just as the deer longs for water we should long for God. But is it God that we really want, long for, and desire with all our heart? If not what is it?
“Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread,
and your labor for that which does not satisfy?
Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good,
and delight yourselves in rich food”
What is it that people really want? …
And just how important are these things?” Now let’s look the things that the pastor found that people want, and see if we can find the answer to our question what do people really want?
First of all, people are concerned about food. Now that doesn’t come as any great surprise, I am sure. Hunger can cause pain beyond description. Most of us can’t even imagine that pain because we have never really been hungry in the starving sense. Of course, some of us seem to be dieting constantly and we think we’re hungry, but in truth there’s no comparison. We eat regularly and we go to bed with plenty, yet over one half of the world is starving. And even in this land of the free and the home of the brave there are always people begging for food.
People will do almost anything to satisfy their hunger. In the Old Testament when famine swept across Egypt, and only Pharaoh had food stored up for that famine, people were willing to sell their property, their lives, their clothing, anything, just for food in Genesis 47.
Do you remember what happened in the gospels after Jesus fed the multitudes? They wanted to make Him king. They wanted a king who could always miraculously give them food to eat. Jesus can supply all our needs, but His biggest concern is our eternal needs. In John 6:35 He said,
“I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry,
and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.”
Are you starving for the meat of the word of God? Are you famished for Jesus? Are you hungry and thirsty for the Spirit of God to lead you to quench your hungering and thirsting through the eternal treasures and the promises of God?
Lord Help us to us to hunger and thirst solely for You. Holy Spirit we give You complete control allowing You to lead us to the only true satisfaction for our hungering and thirsting; Jesus. Amen.
