Marlena Graves

I contemplate, write and speak about the eternal implications of our life in God. I am a lover of beauty (especially the beauty of my family and creation). And I am a justice seeker—trying to overcome evil with good. In addition, I seek answers to these types of questions: What does abundant life look like (John 10:10)? If God is good and we are his deeply beloved children and safe in his kingdom, how then should we live?

I’m married to my best friend, Shawn. He’s a philosophy professor. We’re deliriously happy together. When I married him, I hit the jackpot. Aside from the Lord, our marriage and home is the one safe refuge I have in this life. Together we have two little girls, Iliana and Valentina.

I often speak to students, congregations, and other groups about what it means to follow Jesus. Some favorite writers: Madeleine L’Engle, Eugene Peterson, Kathleen Norris, Carlo Carretto, Charles De Foucauld, Father Greg Boyle, C.S. Lewis, G.K. Chesterton, Henri Nouwen, Thomas A’Kempis, Mary Karr, Dallas Willard, Richard Foster and many of the Church Fathers and Mothers. A favorite poet is Mary Oliver.

I received my M.Div. from Northeastern Seminary in Rochester, New York.

I write for various venues and am a by-lined writer for Christianity Today’s Her.meneutics Blog and Gifted For Leadership Blog.

I am also a proud member of the Redbud Writers Guild.

I have a book forthcoming from Brazos Press in June 2014. It’s called: A Beautiful Disaster Finding Hope in the Midst of Brokenness.
