We are excited to announce . .
LifeNotes, the Life Letter Cafe blog, will be featuring the “40 Week Debt Free Series” starting this Friday. This dynamic series is produced by the Debt Free Squad ministry in Monument, Colorado under the gifted leadership of Jeff Ehrlich.
So we welcome Jeff aboard our Life Writer team . . and invite you to become a better master of your money. We also thought you would enjoy an interview we recently conducted with Jeff . . so you could know “the story behind the story” . .
LifeNotes: When you created the “40-week Debt Free” video series, what was your motivation?
Jeff: At the age of 55 we found ourselves $150,000 in debt not including the mortgage. We knew if we ever wanted to retire in dignity we needed to get our finances under control. We read the “Total Money Makeover” by Dave Ramsey and this book gave us hope that we could do this. Dave’s seven baby steps helped Robin and I become completely debt free in just 5 years and we want to help other’s do the same. Our two grown children have used these same principles to also live a debt free life. Our 40-week series takes in many of Dave’s steps but has evolved into so much more. Our Mission and Passion now is to help others get control of their finances and stop the money fights with their spouse or family members. We want to release the stress of debt from individuals and families and we want to do this through sound Biblical principles.
LifeNotes: It sounds like you have received quite a response – what are your followers telling you?
Jeff: When we started the 40-week video series back in 2011 we were inspired and motivated by the testimonies we received to continue until we were finished. Many times we were tempted to throw in the towel or make it a 9-week series but the Lord would send us his messenger (another couple or individual) to encourage us and let us know how we had helped them. Here is one such testimony from a couple in Canada. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HIlNPRkhIb0 We are so thankful to see this series come to fruition and pray it will help thousands of families all over the world. We believe these principles will never get old.
LifeNotes: Tell us about some of the key issues you tackle:
Jeff: You can see the 40 topics in our introductory video but I feel our first nine lessons are the most crucial which include: Attitude, merging marriage and finances, getting an Emergency Fund, getting organized and then the “Spend every Penny” budget to include your “Debt Destruction” plan. We encourage everyone to get one friend or couple to join them on this 40-week adventure to Becoming Debt Free, God’s Way. This series will be a Life-Changer.
LifeNotes: We understand you have a “Flying the Coop” series as well for young adults – what excites you about this project?
Jeff: As you know I have been a teacher and educator for over 40 years with 25 of those years teaching at the high school level. When I taught business and math classes back in the day I would always devote several lessons to a “Moving out on your own” project. This was a great time to talk about percentages. Even today young folks in their 20′s do not have a clue on what it takes to REALLY move out on their own. With the average school loan debt of $25,000 this is why twenty-somethings are moving back home or still on their parent’s payroll. I can’t wait to introduce our material to youth groups and colleges.
LifeNotes: What is next for the Debt Free Squad ministry?
Jeff: Thanks for asking this question as we have some pretty exciting future plans for the Debt Free Squad.
1. We will be starting live, video broadcasts in October of this year. These will be open to an unlimited audience. We will bring on other Christian financial bloggers to discuss topics such as: budgeting, ways to cut expenses, ways to earn extra money, and teaching twenty-somethings what it takes to move out on their own.
2. We will have workbooks for our various projects to include a 60-day Budget Bootcamp which will be a very intense regiment for those who are REALLY serious about breaking the chains of debt.
3. Lastly, I would like to speak to church groups and Christian Colleges and get them started on the right path financially at a young age. I believe the NEW American Dream will be to live a debt-free life and be able to experience the joy of giving – because you have learned to live below your means.
