If “Arnold” had a voice, I wonder what he would say? You have to admit, everything in his world has changed, everything has been replaced. He has certainly had to ask on many an occasion “Am I next?” In fact, the replacements around Arnold have been replaced too many times to count . . . but there standing ready . . . just as he has been for over thirty-five years . . . is Arnold.
So you ask “Just who is Arnold?” Well, he is not a “who” first of all; rather, he is a “what”. His full name is Arnold Palmer (not the golfer himself), but the cast-metal blade putter that Palmer first designed and marketed in the early seventies. This putter has been the key in many if not most of my best memories on the golf course. Oh sure there have been misses great and small, but is it is hard to forget the putts Arnold has sunk . . . just enough putts on my watch to keep him in the bag.
While Arnold and I are quite the team, it is no small miracle that he is still around and not on display in some Goodwill store. The irons, the woods, the umbrellas, the gloves, the tees, the shoes, the countless tubes of sun block, the very golf bag itself . . . . all of these have been replaced over and over again. But for some reason, I have repeatedly said “no” to new . . . and Arnold has putted a sigh of relief many times.
Ironically, that decision is “out of character” with not just the rest of my life, but really with a core trait of all humanity. We are all constantly and nearly incurably dissatisfied with things . . . a newer, more versatile, stylish, dependable, technologically superior version is always out there to be found. From electronic devices, to beauty products . . . from automobiles to purses . . . replacement is the name of the game. But there is “One” who not only never needs replacing . . . He simply can’t be replaced . .
“In the beginning . . . You laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of Your hands. They will perish, but You remain; they will all wear out like a garment. Like clothing You will change them and they will be discarded . . . But You remain the same, and your years will never end.”- Psalm 102:25-27
This is David “JB” Miller admitting that a nearby course is beckoning . . . the zip code today? North Carolina. And on hole number one and every hole after, I will be reminded of God’s amazing, trustworthy and never-ending love for all of us . . . . by just looking at . . .
. . . Arnold and the replacements.
